I spent the summer of 2025 traveling all of Alaska. I had been following Mel on Facebook for quite a while and knew this was a tour I was going to book. It far exceeded my expectations. It was one of the highlights of my entire summer. The boat ride across the Cook inlet with so much fun. At times it was like a carnival ride! I'm not the most coordinated person, but I had absolutely no problems getting off of the boat and wading through the water to the shore. We saw Bears almost immediately. There was a juvenile bear puttin... read more

My friends and I took the boat to Lake Clark National Park and spent several hours watching bears dig up and eat clams on the shoreline. The boat ride across the inlet was kind of rough, but not too bad. We were very happy with our guide's ability to get us close to the bears without disturbing them. Overall a very good experience.

Captain Mel operates an amazing bear viewing guided tour. Mel will put you on the bears and is very knowledgeable in his craft. The boat ride across the Cook Inlet is another great experience and you never know what you might see. I racked up trips 7 & 8 on my recent trip to Alaska. I look no further for my needs and that’s why I recommend Captain Mel Erickson for your next Alaskan Bear Adventure 🐻

We did a bear viewing tour to Lake Clark and saw a few bears which was great. While Captain Mel and Kimberly were both very nice and helpful, this is not a 5 star review because the boat ride to Lake Clark was incredibly rough and took much longer than expected (3.5 hours vs. the 1-1.5 hours shared originally). We brought my 6 year old daughter and wondered about the safety of the ride given how rough it was. For those considering this trip, please be aware that crossing the Cook Inlet can be rough and when it is rough, Capt... read more

We joined Capt Mel’s tour to Lake Clark on Jul 12, 2026 with his daughter as our naturalist. His experience in these tricky seas shines through. Having chest waders were also very appropriate. We had a great experience viewing the bears and cubs clamming on the shore. That part was amazing. What I didn’t feel good about was the disposal of raw human waste. There was a convenient 5 gallon bucket toilet on the boat with a plastic bag hanging nearby. We assumed it was for the TP and disposed of our TP there but not everyone g... read more
