Our old kitchen cabinets, still the originals from a prewar building, had suffered decades of neglect and abuse. John arduously removed layer upon layer of shellac, enamel, paint, lacquer . . . , sanded the wood smooth, added strips of wood where there were gaps between cabinet doors and frame, filled holes and dents with woodfiller and painstakingly stained the woodfiller to the color of the maple wood.
