I've been seeing Dr. Smythe for several years for glaucoma that I've had for over 30 years. Her treatment plan has always been careful, well-planned, and effective. A few years before I started with her, I had lost some peripheral vision under a different doctor's care. Since then, my vision has held steady. Her office staff has fairly high turnover, but they still do a very effective job with insurance, appointments, testing, etc.
I was given drops for both eyes that caused my eyes to get infected.I called to ask if I could be seen because I wanted to have it checked for infection. Rushes you straight toward invasive surgeries with no other options, and for the pre-op, she sends in a tech...yes, a tech to explain the procedure. Dr Smythe is not even in the building. A tech for a pre-op is dangerous and unprofessional at best. Needless to say, after a second opinion, my Moms glaucoma has been controlled beautifully with nothing more than eye drops for over a year. PLEASE shop around. All doctors are not created equal, and NO tech should do a pre-op visit alone.
Dr Smythe is certainly a competent specialist. I would not recommend her only because she practices primarily by reviewing files while an optometrist sees patients. This can create as much as a 3- week lag time between when testing is performed and patients are informed of Dr Smythe's assessment. So, no news is good news. Most often, patients learn that the test results were "stable" if they ask during a follow-up.
She does NOT TREAT CONDITIONS OTHER THAN GLAUCOMA!
