Don't open a Merrill Lynch account. Lynch is owned by Bank of America. They have an agent at the branch who will sucker you into opening a checking/brokerage account. Lynch arbitrarily closed my account with no explanation. I have a good idea that they closed it when they saw that I was transferring money to Fidelity. Bank of America/Merrill Lynch is sleazy.
Terrible customer service. My father passed away. My mother and I went in to remove his name from the account. The teller was rude when we arrived. After we completed the business at the bank my mom tried to use her card which is now cancelled. We called the branch for help both Valerie (the branch manager) and Beth (the teller) were unwilling to help, they both transferred to the call center where we were unable to connect with an agent. We will not be using Bank of America in the future.
The customer service is terrible. I had never seen white people with such a bad attitude; there was a person of Indian descent ahead of me in line, and the racism was palpable while he was being served. I know they might not be the easiest people to deal with, but customer service is about treating people in the best possible way.
