There is nothing to compare to an autumn train ride through West Virginia’s scenic and colorful New River Gorge.
I enjoyed the ride this past Friday; I hadn't ridden the New River Train, as it was once called, since 1987. However, due to mechanical trouble and inspection failures, the car on which I was booked originally was not in the consist of the train, and neither was the second dome car for which my ticket had been changed. Was good overall. A little long for any age. Was served Panera both ways, disappointing but when your hungry anything is acceptable. The observatories sell out quickly (is very expensive) was disappointed that not all cars are observatories for this trip as one main purpose is to see autumn colors. Staff very friendly. Felt very safe.
Now that I've done it once, I'm over it. Shockingly overpriced for what you get. Nice people running the trip, though. We went on Saturday, so they'd already run the trip a couple times, but they still managed to be delayed and confused about getting on and off the train. If you can tolerate the layover, just ride the Amtrak Cardinal instead.
This was unorganized at best. I waited on phone an hour to speak to someone. Four train cars removed before the trip which then they moved our seats. We had upgraded seats to start. Then move to seat sitting sideways which I cant do. Then moved to the cafe car sitting at a table. Very disappointed and not very comfortable. Breakfast not served until after 10am.
