Ashfield Stone is a mica garnet Schist. Schist is a naturally layered stone having been folded up from ancient seabed and metamorphosed in the slow crush of continents some 400 million years ago. This wonderful and versatile stone has been used traditionally for over 300 years in it's chisel split or cleft form. All of the oldest gravestones, doorsteps, walls, walkways, patios, doorsteps and hearths in this region have been fashioned from this stone. Very nice stone, terrible service. We've been waiting 17 years (yes, years) for a couple small shelves that were promised repeatedly but never delivered. Then we thought we'd give them an incentive by buying another slab for a hearth but after we missed one callback they never called us back again!
We ordered a large amount of Ashfield stone for a stone wall in fall 2019. Each delivery was delivered on schedule, with a beautiful selection of sizes. The wall is a stunning addition to our yard, thanks also to Barry Kuzmeskus as the stone mason. Highly recommend Ashfield Stone Co. in Shelburne Falls.
Bryce was outstanding. Walked us through the type of stone they quarry/harvest, how they cut it, the different varieties, and finishes. He then took us outside to choose the stone. I highly recommend them for interior stone finishes.
