The history of the construction of the current museum is that it was originally built in 1895 by the Durack family on Argyle Downs Station. It was constructed from handcrafted limestone blocks with mortar made from crushed termite mounds, making it a remarkable building for its time. Apparently at the time it hosted many social gatherings and was the central point of the very vast pastoral holding.
