I have always wanted to go dog sledding. But not just sit in a sled, I wanted to drive a sled by myself, and not just anywhere, I wanted to drive a sled in Alaska. Finding Arctic Dog Adventure Company out of Fairbanks, I found the perfect trip for me. Their Aurora overnight had everything I could ask for. We had a spectacular day with Linsey and Kana and a whole kennel of wonderfully excited dogs. We were provided with outer layers to go over our own thermal layers which worked out great. We completed our physical strength/agility tests (very important - this is an active experience) and received our mushing training. Lisbet, Kana, and Nils do a lot of work to make this happen including trips out ahead on the trail to make sure it is in good condition and safe from Moose. And we were off. My husband and I had an unforgettable dog mushing training and ride with Lisbet, Kana, and their amazing dogs. The training struck a perfect balance between theory, safety protocols, and hands-on learning. We were shown how to harness the dogs and then practiced ourselves under supervision, which made us feel confident and well prepared. If you want to mush your own dogsled and not just ride along go with Lisbet. She was an excellent teacher, she takes great care of her dogs and the are happy as can be to run you around. Wonderful experience wrong miss out.

Once in a lifetime experience! I've been a little obsessed with dog sledding since reading some memoirs written by mushers. There are a ton of dog sled tours in Alaska, but most of them have you sit on the sled while a guide drives (or share a sled with another tourist). We chose Arctic dog because they have multiple offerings where they teach you to mush and empower you to drive your own dog team!
