This was my second visit to How to Cook a Wolf and I was not impressed. The Kusshi oysters were weird with a rhubarb snow cone on top and it was not to any of our liking. Despite asking our server if the pork belly was crispy, and he assured us it was seared, it came out soft and rubbery (yuck). On the positive side, the scallops were cooked perfectly and the anchovy pasta was delicious. Also, the server should have told us how large the beers were as we were planning on having wine (which we told him) and decided to have a ... read more
Great thin crust pizza open late in Ballard! Visit during power hour for $1 slices.
Simply Excellent – The food is fabulous.Very creative and lots of fun. As are the drinks. Get there at 5pm when they open and you'll get a table right away. If not, expect a long wait because it is a very small restaurant. Really a neighborhood restaurant that makes living in the city so much fun. Not cheap but would rather have good food than cheap food. Go with another couple and order a lot of different dishes and share. You'll love it.
Cramped and Expensive. The food was very good though. – Finding a good balance between cost and quality is very difficult in any purchase. When you add location and atmosphere it can make things even harder. The food is excellent. The food is expensive. The drinks are expensive. The atmosphere is nice. The restaurant is cramped. There were only two tables that were available for a party of 4. Very long wait times for the table. So unfortunately, the food could not trump the shortcomings.
Service Sucks! – While the food at A &O may be to die for, I will never know since our "server"/bartender never really gave us the opportunity to try anythinhg other than bread and olives! We arrived early for our 8 PM reservations, waited at the bar for 45 minutes to get seated, ordered IMMEDIATELY b/c we were starving and got up and walked out at 9 when no food had arrived at our table, no one checked in to see if we were OK, to apologize for the wait-nothing. In addition to that, they were out of a few menu items, includi... read more
Seasonal Seafood Restaurant – I am honestly hesitant to give A&O three stars. Upon three visits in the past 6 months, both the food and service were inconsistent. I am a fan of Ethan Stowell's work, however A&O doesn't seem to shine quite as bright as his other restaurants. That being said, there are few things they do well. The sea urchin pasta, which I unfortunately missed was speculated to be one of the best dishes in Seattle this summer. My experience with their pasta dishes is that they are bland. Honestly, I could make... read more
Where Local Chefs Eat On Their Night Off – Belying Belltown’s meathead stereotype, this is where food-obsessed locals hang out late night and chefs eat on their night off. Sit at the long, industrial bar or cozy up to the open air front window with a glass of wine from the 100% Italian list. Chef/owner Ethan Stowell’s (Food & Wine Best New Chef 2008 and owner of sibling restaurants How to Cook a Wolf and Union) melt-in-your-mouth beef carpaccio is a requisite prelude to his delicate, handmade pastas. (He grinds his own wheat... read more
Great place for my last meal of the decade! – We came here for a special prix fixe New Years Eve dinner. They had three seatings for dinner, and we were in the second one. There were five courses, beginning with oysters. The remaining four courses had two choices each. I believe it was a crudo, a pasta, a fish, and desert. Among the three of us, we ordered one of everything, so got to taste it all. The oysters were dusted with pollen, and finished with an ice/granita. They were a kind of oyster I've never tasted before, and ... read more
