Coming from a girl who was raised on Mexican food all her life in Southern California. I was extremely disappointed in the food served at Alebrije Mexican Restaurant. It was in no way authentic & I can only believe that people rave about this place because they know no better. Their ground beef is bland & runny & their cheese is an overly processed cheese food product. The meal was inedible & I left over half of it on my plate. Good food for reasonable prices The food at this Alebrije is just as good as the 5th Street location, but the atmosphere doesn't compare. The building is old and the decor is tacky at best. This is a BYOB restaurant, so feel free to bring whatever adult beverage you like to drink. The food is always very good and this is a Berks County favorite.
A gem you might miss – Alebrije occupies a former Bojangles fast food building, but it provides quality and inexpensive sit-down Mexican fare with waiter service. The menu is large, and even a vegetarian like me can be well-satisfied. You won't go hungry, and you can bring your own spirits. Run by a hard-working, friendly Mexican family, Alebrije is the first successful restaurant in this building, and I wish them much luck.
