We did the guided tour that included the sled dogs, gold mining and the train ride. Everything was AMAZING! I thought the sled dog would be ok, but Therese was so informative and passionate about the sport! Lots of information and puppies! Gorgeous dogs that love the sport as well. Then in to the mining. Man, this is the textbook definition of a tourist trap. It is kind of fun panning for gold, although when you turn it in (if you buy something), you’re never really sure if you get the same 5 flecks you actually panned. I’ve seen more gold on the foil wrapper of a Negra Modelo beer. And if you want to go see the puppies, don’t expect huskies. There’s some sort of shepherd breed I guess. It wasn’t really clear. Wonderful experience in Skagway. Our guide Josh “Eureka Joe”, was wonderful. He was engaging and shared so much great info with us.
We had a great time with Longshot Liz and chilcoot chip as our tour guides. They did a great job answering questions and teaching us about the Klondike gold rush. We enjoyed our time getting to pan for gold, we got about 11 flakes between my husband and I, Karrot Top did a great job teaching us to pan. The dog sledding was awesome, we were fortunate enough that Peter was available to tell us about his experience running the Ididorod race 6 times! Then we got to meet the actual sled dog team and hold puppies!!
We visited this attraction as part of a cruise tour. It was so much fun to get a behind-the-scenes look at the sled dogs of Alaska, and even better to snuggle with 4-6 week old puppies!!! We were also impressed with the gold-panning experience. One of our sons found a bunch of gold right away, and we were all successful prospectors by the end. It was fun to go home with some real Klondike gold! Our tour host, Klondike Mike, was also the best tour guide we had during our entire Alaska trip, bar none! Our son, Eli, says "hi!".
