Rented a car for our son in Palo Alto last summer and everything went smoothly. Being a college freshman no big name company would have rented to him.
I tried to reserve a car a few months in advance. Emailed, phoned. In the end Steve told me it would work out on the phone. Now one week before we need the car I emailed to reconfirm. No cars availlable I am told. Not trusthworty at all! Lets you down at the last minute.
I rented a car from A-ACAR (I think it might just be called ACAR) to drive around when going out to the bay area for an internship. I was picked up from San Jose Airport, and able to rent a car for far less than the other major car companies. ACAR's fleet is a little older, but the cost savings in considerable, and a majority of the cars are from reliable brands, so even if the car was older there was little concern.
