Electricity in homes and offices became more common in the United States in 1930, but most of it was concentrated in cities and larger towns. During those early days, only around ten percent of rural areas had access to this utility.

We deal with a myriad of private companies on a daily basis, but there are few as important as those providing utilities. After all, these entities provide us with power, water, gas, and communications, all of which are essential to comfortable and convenient living.

While a public utility company is a business, it isn't free to act on a whim. Because of the nature of the services it provides (e.g. water, electricity, communications), it is heavily regulated by the government to ensure that the public is getting a fair deal.
