Very uncomfortable seating. You're assigned a seat and if you want to change it, you have to pay a fee. I was stuck in an area with 4 seats, 2 facing each other. The person across from me was disrespectful of our space, and this made my trip very uncomfortable. Only groups of 4 should be assigned to these seats. Food selection is minimal, but prices are decent. Booking was easy and was the best part of my experience. Genuinely the worst train service to ever exist . I’ve never taken a via rail train that wasn’t at least an hour late to its destination. Not to mention the late boarding times, you’ll be standing in line for a train that was supposed to board 30 minutes ago. One of my friends had their via rail train arrive 3 hours late not too long ago. Not to mention that the majority of the staff are either passive or rude, and the food/drink cart comes around extremely sparsely. Travelled Halifax-Montreal on The Ocean in sleeper class Jan 1-2, 2025. The staff were fantastic. The old-school 3-person cabin was a bit antiquated but we had 4 power sources and it was very cool for a rail nerd like me. My daughter wished she had wifi but that was a good excuse for her to explore the train and find the lounge. Meals were VERY good. Only the hash browns at breakfast were subpar.
