After reading the reviews, I expected a long wait on the phone and possibly a not so helpful employee on the other end of the phone. I got through to a real person, in under 5 minutes & she was very nice, knowable & helpful.
I have called the individual tax department several times either with questions or to check the status on a filing and have always received courteous and helpful responses. Once, when I had made a mistake, the examiner worked with me over the phone to correct the issue and get my refund to me faster. Wicked better than calling the IRS.
This rating is purely about the people who work the taxpayer assistance line. I have had to call them 4 times over the last couple of years, and they have been absolutely amazing. Helpful, nice, and understanding. Every time the situation was resolved without any further hoops to jump through. I know people have strong opinions on taxes and Vermont's are high, but I want to give credit to the people working in the Department.

Conveniently waited to adjust my income tax so that I owed a little RIGHT before I sold a home. Sent notice via snail mail that DID NOT in any way indicate I was "in bad standing" tax wise then moved as slowly as possible to rectify the issue so that my TAX EXEMPT proceeds could be withheld by the state... An absolute racket being run by the state. The state attempting to hold peoples money to gain interest on until they return it despite having no legal claim to it in the first place is a disgrace.
