As a confessional Lutheran, I find the trend toward modernist design in sacred spaces deeply troubling. These so-called altars would make John Calvin proud, are we purposely aiming to be ugly. There is such this as objective beauty—this ain’t it. We can do better—just look at the cathedrals, the churches our Lutheran forefathers inherited or built. Work by Edward Riojas and some of the other stuff is really good—but much of the work is just bad art and design.
