Saw this building from a bus window and was amazed.
In reality a former arsenal - military post. HQ for Central Park. First location for "The Museum of Natural History"... Really a must see place.
I was walking around the upper east side and ended up on Fifth Ave near the zoo. There I found the Arsenal building. I did not see any explanation but online I found it was built about 1850 to store Arms and ammunition for the NY state militia. A grand and beautiful old building sitting in the park facing Fifth Ave at 64th street. Right next to the zoo. Seems to now be offices for Central Park admin.
