About

Lone rangers on tech-office lunch breaks pack this strip-mall Japanese spot, whose crowded parking lot belies its unimpressive façade. Waits are inevitable, but it's worth it to sit down to a steaming bowl of simple and flavorful udon. Indeed, all the standards are rendered beautifully here, from crisp vegetable tempura to tender, flaky grilled unagi set atop freshly steamed rice. Tanto's menu expands a bit at dinner, bringing more grilled items and izakaya-style small plates. Pristine sushi and sashimi like albacore with ponzu are also a strong pick. You'll likely be seated at one of the closely spaced dining room tables, but the occasional stroke of luck might land you in one of the

poor, unfriendly service – We went on a week night and the place was not crowded. We were not greeted when we arrived and had to wait before we were seated. The food was fine, but we felt rushed. Before even getting the check, the waitress asked us to hurry up because another group was waiting for our table. There was an open table behind us. If you would like a pleasant leisurely dinner in the company of a group of friends, try another restaurant.

Authentic Izakaiya – If you are looking for sushi, go somewhere else. This is a Japanese "izkaiya", a restarant that specializes in small portions. This is desireable when you want to try several totally different items. The food is excellent Japanese homestyle cooking. Some items like the kabocha au gratin might be considered fusion but it is also typical of how contemporary Japanese eat. Tonto would be an excellent choice for entertaining a Japanese client who's getting bored with American sushi and tepanyaki.

Unique authentic Japanese-style Restaurant The items on the menu are unique and authentic. I often eat at Japanese restaurants but this one of a kind. Try the Duck Salad or the Roasted Rice Balls topped with roe and you'll see exactly what I mean. PROS: CONS: Portions are small and expect to pay $25-$30 per person
