I'll start with the most recent from this 2024 tax year. I filed my taxes early & was to receive a state refund for business income. My refund never materialized & after 3 months I received a letter saying they needed substantiating documents - the catch is that the 30 day deadline for them to receive those docs was in a couple of days because somehow it took them almost a month to get that letter to me! This agency operates like a scam company. I had to verify multiple times that this was legitimate. I received a latter from the tax board indicating a balance due. The letter was dated and had a payment due date. When I spoke to the representative, he seemed to indicate that the penalties go up every day and that I was now due more than the amount that was in the notice even though the due date is a week away. The FTB makes the DMV look like a five star experience. There are no curses foul enough to describe how awful of an experience it is to have to deal with the CA FTB as a business. Having to wade through a labyrinth of menus and pre-recorded messages only to finally be able to select the option to speak with a representative and you get a "We're experiencing higher than usual call volume and we cannot connect your call at this time." Wouldn't give them a dollar. Extortion is illegal would recommend filing a police report if you get a letter from them.
Definition of Tyrants. Charge me bunch of unknown taxes. They don't want to hear you out. Just say pay up or we putting a lien on you.
