This store treats its customers like thieves. The store is never adequately staffed, so they installed gates at the entrances and exits. There are never more than 1-2 cashiers, so you have to use the self-checkout machines. But they still don't trust you, so they have an employee to watch over you. Why not just have that person run a register? I'm sure theft is a concern, but it makes for a very unwelcoming atmosphere.
