The place to sample traditional Ukrainian cuisine My wife aren't into sushi or Cajun or most Asian or Mexican or South American cuisines. We're traditionalists...American, Italian, French. Hot dogs, cheeseburgers, Italian beef, pizza, steaks. But we like to sample foreign foods from time to time, to see what we're missing, to see if we don't want to miss it. Interestingly, on our recent visit to Chicago's Ukrainian Village, we discovered Shokolad Pastry & Cafe. Located at 2524 West Chicago Avenue, west of Western Avenue, it is a European cafe offering pastries, cookies and a savory breakfast/lunch menu featuring crepes, pierogi and a delightful array of traditional Ukrainian dishes that you probably have never tried before. Open from 10 to 4 Sunday through Friday and from 9 to 4 on Saturday, Shokolad offers some weekend specials that make you wish you had a Ukrainian grandmother. My wife and I were persuaded to share an order of Hutsulske Pechenya, a delicious blend of cubed beef, potatoes, carrots, lima beans, mushrooms and celery combined in a clay pot and cooked until tender, then served with freshly backed ricotta rolls. For an entree, my wife chose roasted pork topped with mushroom sauce and served with a carrot salad and mashed potato. I opted for a veal cutlet, pan-cooked and served in a cream sauce with sauteed onions, mushrooms and mash potato. For dessert, we shared raspberry and apple crepes with pastry cream. And we took home a Perfect Chocolate Cake with raspberry mousse filling. We'll be back.

wonderful cafe, reminds me of one I would find in Europe. Had the vareniky which was perfectly done. Prices were quite reasonable too!

Places like this are why I love Chicago. Once you've tried Shokolad, you'll be back again and again. The pastries are to die for.

Halyna Fedus gave me some homemade pierogies at Taste of Chicago, have to stop by again. The deserts and coffee hit different 🙌.
