Originally opened in 1938 as Alderman Library, the University of Virginia's main library was renamed Edgar Shannon Library in 2024. The change honored former UVA President Edgar F. Shannon Jr. and reflected the university's reassessment of the legacy of Edwin A. Alderman, for whom the building had previously been named.
