In May 2015, Sealaska Heritage Institute opened the Walter Soboleff Building—our Box of Knowledge. This cultural and research center is dedicated to the sharing and study of the ancient Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. It is owned and operated by Sealaska Heritage Institute, a Native American nonprofit conceived by clan leaders, traditional scholars, and elders and founded in 1980. Great experience to give more history about the people who have lived here for 12,000 years. Personally, I thought the halibut hook was interesting - clever.

I came in and was immediately greeted by John (I think that was his name). SOOO friendly and excited to share his heritage with my son and me. He took us into a large room and explained each level of the replica traditional home. There were lots of informative displays along the back wall with old pictures to help explain in more detail. Although this museum is not very large, doesn't have very many exhibits, it was nice to have a personal guide to answer all our questions.... Except one.... This place provides the white glove personalized experience. They have wonderful artifacts and a guide who got us started. He was a great guy and very informative. Learned so much from the experience. And the gift shop is wonderful. They are supporting native artists. They have a great selection of fantastic jewelry and art.
