Urban sanctuary for introspection and Buddhist meditation – In Short Although Zen Buddhism is itself an ancient tradition, this meditation center was founded in the 1960s by a Japanese Soto Zen priest, Shunryo Suzuki Roshi. Later on, the primarily Caucasian-American center split amicably from a temple in Japantown to build its own site, which remains a place for Westerners to delve deep into the benefits of meditation. The center has blossomed into three Bay Area sites that each offer opportunities for meditation practice and residential retreats.
