In 1970, Earl and Mary Redner bought two small supermarkets near Reading, Pa., and started the first chain of employee-owned supermarkets in Pennsylvania. The stores were operated as IGA Food Stores franchises until 1979, when the company began operating its stores under the name Redner's Markets.
