I first submitted a request for a 401k distribution in August 2015. It's now December. Principal has been extremely bad at communicating status and at contacting my employer to complete the distribution. I had to call in multiple times to check the status of the distribution, and only then did I learn that the process was stalled. I also had to facilitate between Principal and my old employer; Principal apparently didn't have any way to contact them, but that wasn't communicated until I called them myself.
