Extremely deceptive and confusing pricing
Since moving into the neighborhood last year, I’ve bought: Bread that gets moldy within a couple days, blueberries that go bad within a couple days, yogurt that was already chunky upon breaking the seal, and much more. I would come here if you’re in a pinch. But shop at your own risk. There are better options a few blocks away like Fairway
I love their prepared foods section. The rotisserie chicken is always moist and flavorful, and the side dishes (like mac and cheese or potato salad) are homemade and delicious. A lifesaver on busy weeknights.
Produce is consistently fresher than big-chain stores, their berries last all week. Butcher counter cuts steaks to order, and the house-made sausages sell out fast. Staff is always cheerful and helpful.
On a recent visit to Pioneer Supermarket on the Upper West Side, I was deeply disappointed by both hygiene and product quality issues. I observed a staff member handling produce in an unsanitary manner, which was unacceptable and prompted me to leave immediately without purchasing.
