Travel by Steam Engine Having been on the Hood River Railroad before, I had high hopes for a better experience with the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad out of Garibaldi, OR. Unlike the train in Hood River, this train is currently being pulled by a genuine steam engine, which I must say was exciting for my whole family as I'm not sure any of us (even my dad) had been on a train run by an engine this old before. Be assured, while an old engine, it has been refurbished and brought into good running order. Well, the caboose is where you buy your tickets, and is also a store for train memerobilia. After paying your way, you are given tickets, and can sit anywhere you like on the train aside from the caboose. There is an old syle coach car that has been refurbished, as well as a covered car that is more like bench seats with a roof (this is the car we chose to ride on, since it was a drizzly day, but we wanted to be able to see and hear and smell the whole experience). Otherwise, the frontmost car is an uncovered version of the same bench seats. For a bit more money, you can even ride with the engineers in the engine, though there's an age limit for kids, and the limit of riders up there is 2 I believe. We had a great ride along the coast, it was a half-hour trip from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach, with a half hour layover before going back again. The old train puffed and whistled along with great billows of steam and a steady chuffing. The conductor, impeccably dressed, stopped by to collect our tickets, and is a very knowledgeable man about the area and the rail. He stood and told us about the train, the area, and a bit about himself. As we passed by an area of houses, he waved to his wife who was by the tracks as we passed by. I guess they live in the area and love the coastal life. Well, the ride went too fast for us, and we were glad to have been passengers on a rare treat of a trip, and one I highly recommend. When we went, the train was running at noon, 2PM and 4PM.
