My mother had cataract surgery on her eyes more than 10 years ago and still has excellent vision at age 93 so I trusted Dr. DeBry when the time came for my cataract surgery. Somehow, he heard or saw that aside from my occupations, I’m also a Consumer Advocate which connected us in an unexpected way, revealing things about Dr. DeBry that I wish I had known BEFORE my cataract surgery. Here’s why:
January 13, 2021 Dr. DeBry performed cataract surgery on my right eye at Box Canyon Surgery Center. Thet staff was very polite but I felt like I was on a 15 minute assembly line. My cataract procedure was extremely painful (kidney stone level pain) because nobody stopped to administer proper anesthetic before Dr. DeBry stuck needle(s) into my eyeball to make 3 sutures. Would sedating me have disrupted his assembly line? I would have jumped up from the severe pain if my head wasn’t strapped to a gurney. Things went downhill from there. Days later, my vision was MUCH WORSE than before cataract surgery.
January 17, Dr. DeBry phoned me. He immediately addressed me as “Consumer Advocate” so I wasn’t sure if he was phoning to try and avoid bad publicity or something else. He explained that my capsular sac (contains the lens) has a jelly-like substance which he called cortex (cortical material) that might need to be removed with a follow-up laser treatment. I was led to believe that cortex was blocking my vision but Dr. DeBry could easily and quickly eliminate it.
As a Consumer Advocate, Dr. DeBry asked me to look at MyCataractSurgery.com website he appears to have started in 2002. I do extensive internet research every day so I offered to help. When I asked why the website was incomplete, he admitted that he procrastinates. He also told me that he wanted to attract patients from outside Nevada (increase his patients/workload). At that time, I didn’t think these 2 things about Dr. DeBry would affect me as his patient. I was wrong.
Four months later. Despite 3 follow-up sessions and 460 YAG Laser capsulotomy pulses, my vision improved greatly but I was still looking through a cloudy moving cobweb that reduces energy, ability to work and results in very blurry vision after a few hours. I hoped a 4th laser session would do the trick. By this time, I knew the NV Eye Surgery office routine: Dilate eye, sit in waiting room 20-30 minutes. Then Dr. DeBry could clearly view and zap the cortex. On May 18, dilation drop was administered but less than 5 minutes later, Dr. DeBry appeared, took a quick look and said all cortex was gone. I knew he was wrong. Was Dr. DeBry too busy to help me, accepting failure or trying to get rid of me as a patient?
May 24, went to Dr. Spencer Quinton, my trusted Optometrist for over 20 years. Dr. Quinton properly dilated my right eye which allowed him to see the cortex. He also saw the moving cobweb. Additionally, I was informed that Dr. DeBry’s sutures from January are still there. Dr. Debry never told me the sutures were permanent.
June 12, I received an email from Dr. DeBry saying there’s nothing else he could do to improve my vision and that the sutures may loosen. He didn’t say if loose sutures can cause any problems. Research today revealed at least 6 different problems that can result from permanent sutures. Instead of offering to remove the sutures, he quit as my Ophthalmologist.
As of June 13, 2021, Dr. DeBry’s MyCataractSurgery.com website contains false and incomplete information. If you want your vision handled by a doctor who doesn’t complete what he starts, rushes, causes unnecessary pain, provides wrong information, leaves out pertinent facts and quits when you may need further care, then I highly recommend Dr. Peter DeBry.
