Melvin Nelson Sr. and his wife Fluvia established Nelson's on Washington Avenue in West Racine in 1940. Their philosophy was to serve the customer and provide the merchandise they requested. Melvin Jr. and his wife Joan joined the business in 1948 and became full owners in 1966 upon the retirement of Mel Sr. Their son, Jeff, joined the business as Store manager at the Washington Ave. store in 1978.
