Friendly and helpful Since I live about an hour away from Mount Airy and I have a favorite bike shop that's much closer to home, Mount Airy Bikes is not the shop I generally frequent. However, on two occasions, I wanted to try out a specific bike which my local shop did not carry, and Mount Airy did have them, so I made the trip up there, and on both occasions -- most recently today -- I ended up purchasing the bike in question from them.

steverem Mt. Airy has the largest selection of bicycles and accessories I've ever seen. Larry and his staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Weekend buying can be a bit chaotic as they are very busy. However, if you need or want it Larry will find it. I'd recommend them highly for their dedication to cycling. I traded my tandem on a a trike and felt that I had been treated fairly. Larry even delivered a trike for me to Florida, even though I bought it on Craig's List.

Highly Recommend Them! These guys are great!! I was having trouble with my used Trek which I purchased on Craigs List. I took it in and they saw that my bike was too small for my size. They took it off my hands on trade in and sold me a great bike at a great price!! I They have the inventory in that place and so many people helping you out. This is old fashioned service and state of the art knowlege!

Poor Service I knew what I wanted when I got there. I got a "be right with you", and over a half hour later, still no service. I think other people were being helped as they got there, while I was waiting where I was told I would be helped, next to the bike I wanted. I'm sure there are plenty of other stores in the area that would appreciate my business.

Nice enough, until after they have your money I don't dispute that Mt. Airy Bikes and Larry are knowledgeable. And I like the bike I bought from them. And they were mostly nice, though very disorganized and extremely inefficient, while we were shopping for the bike. However, now that he already has more than $5k from us, and we've brought the bike back for a tune-up, the service is terrible. Rude, condescending, arrogant. It's like his other personality has emerged post sale. We won't be going back.

Eccentric larry but great bikes Yes Larry is eccentric and can be in his own world but he is also a national name. Every DC road racer in the 70s and 80s can attribute their start to Larry Black and College Park Bikes. I would trust what he said over anyone else in local business.

arrogant and deceiving worst service with arrogance?? - ?? - 2010-07-13 unless you're planning on spending $5K or more on a tandem, don't waste your time going up to Mt. Airy. I called ahead to order a cruiser tandem bike for my parents. Larry answered and said I shouldn't order a Sun because it's made in China and is of very poor quality, and that my parents would need to come in and try out their 160 tandem bikes on site because Larry's passion is fitting people on tandems. I tried to explain we had already tried the Sun t... read more
