Before beginning any whitening treatment, consult with your dentist. A dentist will be able to conduct a mouth exam to ensure that you do not have any cavities or inflamed gums before using a whitener. Meeting with your dentist will also give you an opportunity to discuss the best teeth whitening methods for your teeth and what kind of results you can expect.

Using your teeth as a tool to open containers, crack nuts or even loosen objects can cause tooth fractures, cracks and even tooth loss. The next time you are tempted to use your teeth, reach for a real tool instead.

Whiten your teeth at home with a prescription-strength whitener. Dentist-dispensed home whitening kits include a customized mouth tray made from an impression of your teeth and highly concentrated whitening gel. The concentrations of peroxide are lower than the whiteners used in your dentist's office, but they can be applied to your teeth for a longer period of time, often yielding longer-lasting results.

You've never had a cavity and brush and floss religiously, but your teeth are still yellowed and unattractive. One possible reason is intrinsic discoloration. There are a number of different explanations, including some type of trauma to the teeth, which then affects the color of the tooth - and not just the enamel.

Veneers are very thin, porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. Veneers are individualized to each tooth and help to disguise discolored teeth that do not whiten with bleaching procedures. Veneers can also be used to close gaps between teeth.

Your dentist can speak to you about the techniques available to improve your smile based on the results you seek and the condition of your teeth. Your dentist will be able to tell you what to expect during your treatment and what, if any, maintenance is required, as well as what the changes will look like on you.

A great tool to help keep braces clean is an electric toothbrush. The electrically powered bristles are often able to get into small crevices between braces and teeth in order to remove small food particles.
