It was the worst cupcakes I've ever tasted in my life. – their cupcakes are way over priced and they are served brick hard. Their cupcakes are also topped with some type of whip cream that disgusting. I just don't recommended anybody waste their money on the cupcakes. Each cupcake is $2.50 when each cupcake is worth .50 seriously.
NOT WORTH THE WAIT OR THE MONEY , its all HYPE! – I went there today to finally try this most talked about bakery with excellent cup cakes, well I was VERY disappointed !! Thank god I didn't wait on line today, I was able to get in right away. I purchased the red velvet cup cake and the chocolate one and the were both DRY. I will never go back there and there are a lot of other places that sell great cupcakes.
What a joke – Was excited to go to Magnolias just like everyone else. I got 4 cupcakes, one was red velvet with sugary coolwhip icing, the other with chocolate icing, and the other 2 where nearly unidentifiable. One had german chocolate icing, but the cake didn't look or taste like chocolate to me. The other had some swirled white and brown icing with no taste and some sort of spiced cake. All 4 where dry and crumbly and half the size of other competitors. I've had better Duncan Heinz. Sad that they are making a fortune off ... read more
Wedded bliss – We have always been huge fans of Magnolia, so when we got married we had a cupcake tree instead of a wedding cake. The Magnolia staff (Misty in particular) were amazingly helpful and sweet (no pun intended) in getting the details just right for us. We ended up giving away cupcakes in individual boxes as favors as well. All together it got to be pricey, but not more than a normal wedding cake. I'm going back Saturday to get a red velvet cake for a friend's birthday and the Magnolia cook book is a favorite of mi... read more
Dry Vanilla Cupcake – I don't get it? Maybe my cupcakes had been sitting out all day and just weren't fresh. My husband carried these on his lap on the flight home from NYC all the way to Houston for my birthday. I felt bad admitting they were not good. They were purchased and tasted the same day. My neighbor bought me a birthday cake from the local grocery store and everyone enjoyed that more. Maybe the other items are good there but I would avoid the popular VANILLA CUPCAKES. Yuk. If you ever see a SPRINKLES CUPCAKE CHAIN,... read more
BEYOND overrated – I LOVE cupcakes and ever since I heard about Magnolia's, I couldn't wait till my next trip to NYC. SO when I arrive, it's this shoebox of a bakery. You don't order your cupcakes, they are placed on a table and you choose what you want, very similar to buffet style. I order a vanilla cupcake because I love vanilla frosting and I figure that this is a recipe that's almost fail proof. How do you screw up plain vanilla? After my friends and I pay for our purchase we walk to a nearby park to enjoy our treats. I... read more
I WANT to love this place but... – The cupcakes are pretty, the stores are cute and you want to fall in love. But truthfully, I've had their cupcakes on two different trips to New York with the highest expectations and both times have been disappointed. A little place called Mellissa's in SOHO is about 100 times better. Magnolia's frosting just isn't that good. Sorry.
REVIEW FROM CITYSEARCH's 3BUCKBITES DICTATOR – Magnolia's is a cupcake landmark. It has the cultural cachet of being name-dropped on Sex and the City. It attracts tourists from far and wide. The staff was incredibly, unreasonably sweet. Some cute old ladies decided to chat with me. However, the actual cupcake itself was merely okay - the cake was a bit dry and I found the frosting underwhelming. Well, not everything can be perfect, right?
So Overrated – Let's see where to start... ok the ridiculous wait. If you want to look like a chump to people who live in the area, waiting in line at Magnolia will do it. Then when you get inside you are met with frazzled, curt staff who look at you like a moron if you even pause during your order or dare to ask a question. Then when you finally get to taste one of these lovely cupcakes, your mouth is filled with a sugary - sugar filled - sugar like - sugar taste that takes you back to those fond memories of cheap grocery s... read more
