Magnolia cupcakes?? BLECH – I seriously do not know what the hype is about with that place. I went there recently for the first time, got 2 cupcakes and a banana pudding. First of all, they only sell 2 flavors of cupcakes, predominently vanilla with vanilla frosting (ooh, very exciting), in different colors. The cake itself was completely tasteless and dry; the frosting was WAY too sweet. If that's what you want, then you might like their cupcakes, but there is no flavor. The banana pudding: the vanilla wafers were dry, they... read more
Need to say you've tried it, but don't get too excited – With all the hype and popularity surrounding this famous bakery (Devil Wears Prada, SATC), I suggest you at the very least try a cupcake. Be your own judge however. The frosting was very light, but not quite chocolatey enough for this chocoholic. The cake was nothing to write home about. Infact, I might take a boexed cake over their recipe. The nilla pudding looked good and the bakery itself felt homey. A lot of patrons were waiting for the t-shirts, something about ev... read more
Late Night Hours Build Popularity. – Been here multiple times. I have some friends that swear by it, and I'm always willing. Unfortunately the quality has never been consistent. Some days the cupcakes are soft and pleasant, while other days dry and crumbly. The icing is a standard sugar icing rather than a traditional buttercream, which is sweet and granulated the way it should be. Always a great selection of cakes, and the red velvet is nice, but nothing to get too excited about. Overall they are good. Take them for what th... read more
Can't Believe the Rudeness – My wife and I went there with my sister who was in from out of town (this was my second Magnolia experience and the cupcakes weren't that good the first time). We waited almost an hour and were then greeted by a very rude doorman who ordered us to "wait your turn". After handing the cashier our box of cupcakes she exclaimed..."Thanks! I guess I'll just use my x-ray vision to tell what's in here". I was so angry at her attitude that I refused to buy the cupcakes and left. My wife, not wanting to r... read more
I prefer Betty Crocker – after all this hype, i said EHHH whats an hour wait?? As im in this long line, wrapped around the building, i can see the tennants in this brownstone, saying "its not worth it"..that should have been enough warning. After eating one of their cupcakes, I felt no urge to touch anything sweet for so long. It was so SUGARY, like you can feel the grains in your mouth..I prefer frosting to be smooth, not grainy. And as for the cupcake..it was very very dry, not moist at all..I wouldnt have even eaten the e... read more
Great cupcakes – Magnolia cupcakes are fantastic and truly worth the $1.75 price. The bakery itself is very cute and in such a quaint setting - and that's half the fun. Go on a weekday to avoid long lines. My favorite combo is white cake with vanilla frosting - very sugary and buttery! The chocolate flavor is good, too, but not anything too special.
Long Line Fantastic Cupcakes! – Personally I think the people writing these reviews either went on a bad day, or are all being typical NY and bashing a good thing. The cupcakes are delicious. The buttercream frosting is so good, and the cake on any cupcake is moist and fluffy. How could you have possibly gotten a stale, blah cupcake, when you have to wait on line for 20 minutes, and people are purchasing them like no one will ever make cupcakes again. Every cupcake is fresh when you buy it. I have never had a bad experience.... read more
I don't think so... – What is all the fuss about?!? I've been there twice; once on a S** and the City tour, and I was very disappointed. Thought I'd give them another chance on my own during another visit to NYC; again, dry and crumbly. Yuck. I can make better cupcakes from a Betty Crocker box!!!
Honestly...well..... – I'm from Texas and we visited NYC for 2 weeks staying at the Habitue on Horatio St. in the Village. The Magnolia Bakery was on our "must do" list so with much anticipation we went there, stood in line in this little hot shop for a cupcake that was spectacularly average. Yep. We're glad we stopped in but I don't think we'll ever have to go there again. We did find a chocolate/pastry shop somewhere further down between 4th and 8th in the Houston St. whereabouts that had a much better cupcake (and a large... read more
