I recommend pick-up – I ordered a cake here and there was a HUGE mix up with the delivery company because they do not do their own delivry. If it wasn't for the manager Shanna and her excellent customer service this review would have been terrible. She understood that there was a mistake made and she promptly fixed it. Aside form the mix up with the delivry the cake was very rich and my sister (for whom the cake was for) enjoyed it. Thank you Shanna for all of your help!!
Bland, Flavorless, Highly Overrated - Don't Bother – I have every cookbook by Jennifer Appel (former partner of Magnolia) and Allysa Torey, including "Magnolia Bakery," "More From Magnolia," and "At Home with Magnolia," and all of the recipes are wonderful. These are my go-to books for baking, and everything always turns out perfect. That said, I finally made it to the bakery last week, and waited happily on line for 45 minutes, envisioning the sweet surprises to come. I purchased the infamous vanilla vanilla and red velvet ... read more
Great experience!!! – Spent the day in the city with my 13yr. Seeing Rent and including afternoon cupcakes and was so happy we did this. The day we will always remember!! My daughter hates icing, but not on these cupcakes not too sweet...perfect. I wished i would have taken some home to share but really did not want to sit through the production of Rent . It was so good i have decided to take the 4 hour round trip for my daughter's birthday in September so she can have the cupcakes for her speical day.
Coasting on it's Cupcake Stardom – Utterly disappointed to take a few friends to Magnolia tonight. Everything except my husband's vanilla bean cheesecake was flavorless! Vanilla/Yellow Icing cupcake was bland, the refrigerator cake we got should have tasted of something but instead was all texture and a hint of the stale refrigerator. All for $15! We will not be returning. Suckers beware, dont stand on line for useless cake. Too bad Mary Off Jane closed down, now that was a place to eat cake!
Really special experience – I went to Magnolia on a Sunday evening. There was a short line around the corner, but it moved pretty quickly. My experience was really great. I am a baking and pastry student currently and had heard a lot of news about the bakery. The atmosphere of the bakery is very retro and cute. The space is seriously small, but the staff was super friendly and funny. Also, the smell of this place is incredible. I choose two vanilla vanilla cupcakes. I was happy to find that the cup cakes on this night were p... read more
Fiction - just like SATC – I recently went to the Columbus Avenue incarnation of this famous bakery. I'll tell you what - I certainly hope they use different recipies down on Bleecker St!!! Entenmann's makes better baked goods than the absolute garbage I bought from Magnolia on Columbus. My wife had a chocolate cupcake and I had the red velvet cake. Both were dry and the frosting was bland and something less than what I'd call thick and creamy. Both were (of course) overpriced, but I could deal with that if they at least tas... read more
magYESlia – I am a longtime Magnolia fan and I'm really surprised by all the negative press the cute little bakery is getting on this site. Out of all the many, many times I've been there I have had ONE bad experience, and that was when my mom mistakenly got cake with whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream, which she then refused to eat. However, that was HER mistake, not the bakery's. First of all, Magnolia's "small size" "long line" "self-serve" etc. are part of its APPEAL. It's an old-fashioned bakery with none of ... read more
Only when high. – Whether you and your friends are ripping a bong or hitting the fattest blunt of your life, as I am currently about to do, Magnolia will treat you right. I typically don't go for oversized pieces of cornbread dowsed in sugar, but when the grass beckons, it beckons hard. First things first, the worst part about Magnolia has nothing to do with its cupcakes. Oh no, my friends -- it's the customers. That one couple from Oklahoma who gleefully watches batch after batch of diabetes being placed on the filthy windo... read more
Dry muffin, extremely sweet icing – Tried cupcakes from about 5 bakeries in NYC and this is one of the worse. Service is pretty average. Nobody would seem to take notice of you. When I go there wasn't any queue. Just a few people. Bought a few of the vanilla ones and the muffin was very very dry and the icing overly sweet. As in too sweet to the point where I only finish the muffin and left the icing part out. Types of cupcakes offered seems average.
