Waste of money – I have been obsessed with cupcakes for years; trying them at every bakery I can...always in search of those yummy treats. I was excited to finally try the famed Magnolia (the one on Upper West Side). I bought six but could not finish even one. They had just put them out, and I ate them immediately (so they were fresh), but they were extremely dry and very hard, as if they were a week old; one of the worst cupcakes, if not the worst, I've actually paid for. I threw them away after trying the chocolate and van... read more
Completely disappointing :( – I was so excited to discover the newest outlet of Magnolia Bakery on 49th and 6th Ave. It was a friend's birthday and I wanted to get her a Red Velvet Cake--it's her favorite. Unfortunately, this cake which was made that day was the worst excuse for Red Velvet I've ever had. Not only was it just a chocolate cake with red food coloring ( a real Red Velvet is completely different than just chocolate cake) it was dry and barely had any flavor. The frosting, while appearing creamy was completely tas... read more
You have GOT to be kidding me! – Ok so after all the hype I hear about the pink cupcake at Magnolia Bakery - that same one that was on S*x and the City - I thought I have to try this - loving cupcakes as I do. So I take my husband and another couple to check it out. We see the line all the way around the building and are immediately excited - it HAS to be good for all these people to be waiting like this. We wait and wait - meanwhile smelling this sweet wonderful scent of vanilla and cake. We walk into this tiny and I mean t... read more
Get there early ,to have a selection – What a disappointment. Clausterphobic, people hovering over muffins, not knowing who touches what. The only tasty dessert was the banana pudding. Otherwise, all the muffins we tried were either too dry, or the taste lacked.
Completely & Utterly Overrated! – I had been wondering what the fuss was all about since I've walked by the bakery and the lines would be out the door. So I finally decided to try it. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY! The set-up of the store is horrible...the "pick up your own cupcake" table makes for an unnecessary crowd around it...making it more uncomfortable in the super tiny store... I had a chocolate cupcake and my friend had a red velvet. We were both completely disappointed. The cupcake was dry and tasteless and the frosting wa... read more
WOW! – LOVE the cupcakes!!! It's the icing that makes these stand out! It's a MUST for every trip to NYC. I did finally try the red velvet cupcakes ... not that great. Stick with the regular cupcake. The lines can get very long and the inside quite cramped but I suggest trying one of these for yourself ... they're quite tastey!!
I, too, wasn't impressed – My friend swore up and down that a cupcake from the Magnolia Bakery would change my life, and for the calories that I consumed... I wasn't impressed at all. I purchased a vanilla cupcake with pink icing, which I understand is the most popular kind of cupcake they sell. The cake was not even close to being moist - it was almost stale-tasting. The icing was sickeningly-sweet and nothing to rave about. After I was finished, I felt like a had a brick in my stomach. I won't be making a special trip for ... read more
Over-rated – I still don't get what is so great about The Magnolia Bakery. After hearing so much about their cupcakes, I decided to pick up some and they were not that great. They're unbelievably sweet and greasy, and expensive too. I recommend going to your local grocery store and picking up some from there- they'd probably be much cheaper than Magnolia's.
Undeserved hype – My wife and I went to Magnolia Bakery to check them out. I'd heard about this place on television and in print, and we tentatively planned to order cupcakes from them for our daughter's first birthday. I am so glad we tried them out in advance. We tried a red velvet cupcake and a vanilla cupdack with chockolate icing. They were bland and greasy. Honestly, I've had better cake made with Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker. The icing on the red velvet lacked flavor and left an oily feel in our mouths. The chocolate... read more
