About

Adding to New York's melting pot of culinary cultures is Koliba, an intimately-spaced restaurant that specializes in Czechoslovak cuisine. With rich and creamy dishes with a meat base such as Pork Schnitzel, Pirogies and Potato Spaetzle with Sheep-cheese Bacon featuring in the menu, the meal tilts quite a bit to the heavy side, so come hungry. Light Czechoslovak beer - both in tap and bottled options - help alleviate some of the food-induced comatose. The ambiance is cozy and the service friendly, and Koliba also takes bookings for private events.

Good, hearty Eastern European dishes, nice selection of beers – A cozy dining room and a small bar area, with traditional hunting lodge decorations on the walls, first greet the visitor to Koliba. This restaurant specializes in Czech and Slovak dishes, and does not disappoint. Most of the meat dishes are well prepared in the traditional manner and typically come with a hearty selection of sides (dumplings, potatoes and vegetables). All dishes are well proportioned and are priced reasonably. There also is a good selection of Czech beers and liquors on hand. Try to go during one of their special game meat weekends, the specials are fresh and well prepared. For a great all-Czech experience, go to Koliba first for dinner, then go to the Bohemian Beer Garden (just a couple blocks away) for drinks into the night.

Czech point The roast duck on a bed of red cabbage, plus pork schnitzel with potato-pancake batter. The duck was flavorful and incredibly moist and tender without being too fatty, as duck can be. Neither of us are fans of cabbage, but we still managed to down most of the mound piled on the plate -- no idea what they did to make it taste good, but it worked. Our schnitzel was as hearty as one would expect, but more important, it was done right. Schnitzel in this country can easily be disappointing, relying on the fail-safe of frying to make it taste good. Koliba's version was done with knowledgeable care. Both entrees were accompanied by knedliky, the quintessentially Czech sponge-bread dumplings.

LIKE BEING IN EASTERN EUROPE... – THIS IS GREAT RESTAURANT. I HAVE ENJOYED DINNER SEVERAL TIMES AND KEEP GOING BACK. I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS THE FOOD THE WAITRESSES OR THE BEER. THE ROOM ITSELF REMINDS ME OF BEING IN EUROPE, THE FOOD IS SUPERB, PORTIONS GENEROUS AND THE SERVICE IS GREAT. I WAS SERVED BY DARINA AND MONIKA TWO SPECIAL PEOPLE. THE BEER IS ALWAYS FRESH. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE STARO-PRAMEN BEER, NECTAR OF THE GODS... NOT EASILY FOUND IN NYC.

Heavy and Heavenly – We were very impressed with the food and value. The food is perfect for a cold winter night and the cabinessence is warm and cozy. You must try the garlic soup!
