After completing our business taxes, Kim told me she would file an injured spouse form to prevent my wife’s prior tax debt from affecting my refund. Later, I received a notice saying I owed about $1,000 — which turned out to be her old debt. When I asked why the form hadn’t been filed, Kim said it couldn’t be done until a return was issued.
