I stayed at Cabin Kai 4 at Kalani Seaside Retreat Center from December 26–30, 2025. Below are the pros and cons to help those planning to book this unit. Pros: •More affordable compared to hotels near Hilo town •Beautiful neighborhood and surroundings •Free parking •Free drinking water •Free Wi-Fi (though the signal is weak) Cons: •Major privacy concern: There are no window coverings for the floor-to-ceiling windows by the bathtub. Beautiful place and stay! Really quiet and stunning views. Happy to know there was a yoga studio, ecstatic dance and a drum circle event happening nearby! Also the beaches across the street were so dramatic and beautiful. Clean and quiet. Would definitely stay again.

This is a hard review to write because it's so subjective. But I'll try. This place is beautiful and fun, no doubt about it. The staff are kind and friendly. Our hut was a cute kitchy Chinese theme. It seemed clean enough, though there is rust and and aging issues here and there likely from the sea air. I can see if it didn't meet people's standards if you're used to 3 star hotels but it was good enough if you aren't too picky. I had high hopes for Kalani Oceanside Retreat given its peaceful setting, but our room was not clean or properly prepared—and as a parent, the experience was downright unsettling. The most serious issue was finding a drawer full of marijuana, a knife, rolling papers, and a lighter—all accessible to my four-year-old, who discovered them while exploring.
