Like any other part of the body, the internal structures of the mouth can be examined using an x-ray. With this imaging tool, dentists and oral surgeons can check for things like bone loss, malignant and benign tumors, and cavities.

With the use of laser dentistry it can be an option to perform multiple procedures during the same appointment. One of the many reasons this is possible is due to the advantageous control of bleeding that laser surgery offers.

With IV moderate sedation for a dental procedure, you are literally receiving the sedative drug through a vein. This is beneficial, as the drug will not only go to work more quickly but the dentist will be able to continually adjust your level of sedation for maximum benefit.

While we think of teeth when we hear the word dentist, that's not all they fix. In fact there's a specific type of dentist called a periodontist who specializes in gum disease as well as the placement of dental implants.

Nitrous oxide was first used in a dental context in 1845 in Connecticut. Dentist Horace Wells had attended a demonstration for entertainment purposes and saw how nitrous oxide affected several volunteers. One injured a leg during that demonstration but didn’t realize he was hurt, apparently because of the nitrous oxide. That led to the connection between nitrous oxide and pain-free dentistry.

For moderate sedation, pills are commonly prescribed and you will them take according to the dentist’s direction. You may or may not fall asleep, depending on the dosage and your body type, but you will need someone to take you home regardless.
