I was so excited to visit this shop after seeing it all over social media. But when I visited, I was immediately scolded for taking a photo by the owner in the most disrespectful way (again, I’ve seen photos of this shop everywhere online). The selection was absolutely beautiful, with a great assortment of vintage pieces. However, the owner came across as a bit unwelcoming. She chastised me for taking a photo of the dresses, insisting I should always ask first in case I was a designer trying to copy the styles. That would make sense—if she were the actual designer. But these are vintage pieces.
I had a wonderful experience at Illisa’s yesterday! It was my first time in the shop and the owner was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. She hand picked some pieces for me but also let me dig around to my heart’s content and I ended up leaving with some wonderful treasures. I absolutely recommend this shop to anyone in NYC with an interest in antique clothing!
I visited this shop today during my trip to NYC as a Vintage fanatic Angeleno who is in the vintage collecting / selling community back in LA... i work in the fashion industry *and* i collect 1890s to 1940s slip dresses, and came in with a friend who knew exactly what they were looking for. both of us are knowledgeable re: antique dresses. however, we were told to not touch anything and to instead let them know what we were looking for. my friend described the kind of dress they were looking for, but the older woman working there kicked us out of the store anyway and sent us to the bins outside which were full of torn, unwearable stuff. it's strange because i've purc... read more
