I love that the ferry is free but can be stressful to get on. It is first come, first serve. One car or larger vehicles can make the difference. The ferry we were hoping to get on to Ocracoke we missed because of one car that cut us off during our drive to the ferry. Locals have priority to get on the ferry. There is the museum, shops, and bathrooms if you have to wait for the ferry. I would not recommend leaving your vehicle unattended.
