The grotto itself is very beautiful, the girls at the front desk are kind and professional and they've done a great job with the change room offerings (hair products etc) It can get a little noisy inside if there are loud talkers, but often it's quiet and the other guests respect everyone's space. The saunas have been a great addition and same with the new lounge areas. Offering of water, still or carbonated was a nice touch, but unless you want to leave the grotto entirely and head upstairs to where coffee, tea and granola ... read more
I recently visited The Grotto Spa to enjoy the mineral pool and sauna experience. While the ambiance and facilities were pleasant, I was genuinely disappointed to discover that an automatic gratuity was added to my bill—especially for a portion of the experience that I would not consider a direct service. Gratuity, by definition, is meant to be a voluntary expression of appreciation for exceptional service. It’s something a customer chooses to give, not something that should be imposed.
Overall, my experience here was okay. Pool and sauna was fine and it was somewhat relaxing. Very disappointed that it was overcrowded, especially when I was under the impression that they only allow a certain amount of people in order to keep it quiet and relaxing. Definitely louder conversations happening and no staff tried to manage the whole 'spa' environment. After booking, but then seeing some of the negative reviews, I was a little hesitant. Upon arrival that all disappeared. This place is fabulous. To be able to leisurely soak in the mineral pool, the hot tub, the sauna, relax in the quiet garden was so welcome. We spend so much of our life rushing, rushing, rushing. Then to top it off I had a wonderful massage from Taylor who I'd highly recommend! I left with such peace of mind to enjoy the rest of my day in Nanaimo watching the Snowbirds!
