1400 apartments and barracks rooms have sat vacant at the former Castle AFB in Central California since the base closed in 1995. All of this housing is owned by Merced County and managed by the County's Department of Commerce and Aviation. There is some concrete and brick architecture here that would make a wonderful retirement community. Merced County supervisors should sell this dirt cheap to a developer and the county should fire the people who are now in charge. There is 2000 acres of vacant land with this that should also sell to a developer. Greenbrier has the know how to make something beautiful here! The concrete and brick units were built in 1990 and known as the Summit Dorm Complex and part of the complex was called the quad. Buildings sit at angles on curved streets with beautiful landscaping. There are approx 900 dorm rooms with each pair of rooms sharing a bathroom. Small kitchenettes could be added to make each pair of rooms an apartment. 300 units of this are leased to Sierra Aviation Academy and they are housing for student pilots learning to be Airline pilots. The remaining 600 units sit vacant and neglected. There are approximately 144 apartments at Castle that were built in the early 1970's for visiting Officer Quarters. Renters live in 6 or 8 of these apartments and Merced County has begun to remodel a few more of them. There is a beautiful brick and concrete dorm complex near the South End of the old base with approx 200 dorm rooms and it looks like a luxury motel. It sits empty and neglected All of this housing is connected to Hwy 99 Freeway with a new interchange called the Atwater-Merced Expressway. There is a high speed rail system under construction that will go through the Castle property and connect San Francisco to LosAngeles. Merced County Needs Greenbrier Development!! Greenbrier, PLEASE contact Daron McDaniel, Chairman, Merced County Board of Supervisors!!
