About

Theater History In 1987, members of the famed comedy troupe THE GROUNDLINGS (whose alumni include such comedic luminaries as Will Farrell, Conan OBrien, Lisa Kudrow, Chris Kattan, Cheri Oteri, Michael McDonald, Phil Hartman, Kathy Griffin, Paul Pee Wee Herman Ruebens, Jon Lovitz and Julia Sweeney) made the trek to New York City to establish a new outpost. This intrepid group of comic writers and performers were led by current Board member and Director of Corporate Entertainment, Hilaury Stern. This is a great intimate theater, it does 6 shows every weekend, on Fridays and Saturdays. Definitely worth checking out.

Who knew? – This New York City improv staple is remarkable for their tenacity and their vibrance. They have improv and sketch shows regularly, with the improv ranging from hilarious short form to completely improvised one-act plays. Their shows feature veterans and beginners, with every show structured to show off the ensemble's strengths. Look for special offerings like their production of "How We First Met" as well as "Off the Top of Our Heads," a Gotham standby.

Meet Market is Hilarious!!! – I have to say Meet Market is the best improv show I have ever seen. The cast is outstounding and everyone can relate the dating show theme. I saw the opening weekend and I WILL BE BACK!!!

Improv, sketch and comedic oddities found above a sushi joint on the outskirts of Chelsea. – Place Matters Founded 15 years ago by members of The Groundlings, GCI has a stable home in this second-floor walk-up theater that seats 55. Audiences should come prepared for interaction--especially those in the front row--who sit close enough to literally rub shoulders with the cast. GCI is directly above Monster Sushi, which easily solves the age-old dinner and a show problem. On the Scene GCI has its own in-house improv troupes as well as guest performers. Once a month, GCI's Carl Arnheiter does the James Lipton thing with his buzz-worthy "Inside Joke" series--peering into the mind of comics like Marc Maron and writers from "The Onion." Shows from the in-house troupes (filled with alum from Second City and the neighboring Upright Citizens Brigade) require lots of audience input but reward you with a high hit ratio of spontaneously created humor. Ongoing classes teach improv, scenework and character skills.
