Beginning in 1907 in Mebane, N.C., Fitch Lumber Co. moved into Carrboro when rapid development occurred surrounding The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It now operates like a smaller version of Lowes or Home Depot, catering to the wealthy yuppies instead of the good old boys of yore. You can still get your nails and boards but it's more like a real store than a piney smelling lumber yard. Fitch builds houses too, and has just about everything you need to build or repair your own.
