I was a Firstbank customer for 35 years. When I opened my checking account I was 19 and it was “Free Checking” that meant no minimum account balance and unlimited check writing and withdrawals. I enjoyed that privilege for 34 years until they changed their policy in 2024 requiring direct deposit from an employer and/or a minimum $5000 balance at all times or pay a monthly $12 account maintenance fee. I got a new account with this bank. I was not told about any fees, I was offered a savings account, which I accepted after I’d asked if both accounts would be free. I was told they were and told it didn’t matter how much money I had in either account, that both would remain free. A week later, I’m checking my accounts and I see that I’m being charged for my savings account. Right then and there, I knew that I was of course being lied to.
