Basically, your sump pump keeps heavy rain water from filling up your basement and instead directs that water to the sewer. If your sump pump stops working and you are experiencing flooding, there could be a clog in the sewer system that will need to be repaired.
Your septic drainage field should not have any odors. If you detect them, it may be a sign that the field needs to be repaired; however, it may be a problem with pipes or drains. In either event, the system needs to be inspected and the type of needed repair identified.
