Used to be great. Going downhill fast. – I've been eating take out here for at least 35 years, and I've never had a bad meal. They've always had delicious, crunchy and juicy fried chicken and great spuds. Never a fan of the "dip"...kind of bland and I prefer to use ranch....but the baked beans have always more than made up for it. Unlike any I've ever had, with a deep mahogany color and a rich molasses flavor.
Yesterday, I decided to eat in at the attached bar. Big mistake. At first, I was enthused...the menu has been expanded and I saw an article on the wall about a new owner. Great! Good to see someone young taking over, and the new menu items indicated some ambition to succeed.
Unfortunately, my enthusiasm was short-lived. The service was atrocious and slow, with my waitress getting my order wrong twice. But, even worse, the food was really bad. While my chicken breast was good, the spuds were overcooked and dry...just crunchy dry shells with nothing inside. And the beans I've loved for a lifetime are gone. In their place, some really generic, out of the can baked beans that I didn't even finish.
If I had never been here before, I would give it one star and never return, however, 35 years of good food earns them an additional star and a second chance. I'm worried, though, that the new owner has lost what has made this place great for so long. An expanded menu is fine, but there's a reason Fryer Tuck has been in business for this long, so don't screw it up! Do the basics right. I hope I'm wrong about this place going downhill, because I love(d) it. One more chance.
