Initially I had reached out to Derek months before we were placed with a child to understand how the finalization process worked from a legal standpoint. Derek was able to answer all of my questions in an understandable way. Once we had been matched and placed a few months later, we were told Derek was a judge and was no longer practicing. The entire process was smooth, despite some difficult circumstances. We had a very unique adoption situation, which included multiple states, three guardianship conservators, and biological parents who were in jail or hard to find due to substance issues.
